Haiti Mission Trip Reflection – Michelle Moreland

Haiti Mission Trip Reflection – Michelle Moreland

Going on a mission trip is something that I have always wanted to do, but have never had the chance. I feel like too many of us let the craziness of life get in the way and don’t spend enough time giving back and helping others in need. LiveBeyond’s mission statement is “to LiveBeyond… ourselves, our culture, our borders & this life so that others can LiveBeyond … disease, hunger, poverty and despair to transform Thomazeau for the Kingdom of God.” Their goal, much like STAR’s, is one that definitely embodies ways in which I wanted to promote change and serve others. I knew that going down there would allow me to make a positive impact on the lives of others. What I didn’t expect was for the people of Haiti to make such a large impact on my life. Seeing first hand what life is like for them was a very eye opening experience for me and it was easy to be overcome with emotion. It’s amazing how they live in such unbelievable circumstances, yet have so much hope for their lives and love for Jesus Christ. So many aspects of my life were really put into perspective on this trip. It has made me even more grateful for everything I have and the opportunities I have been presented with. I am excited to share my experiences with my high school athletes in order to continue to influence them in a positive way.

Another thing I didn’t expect was to make so many new friends and to build lasting friendships with the other STAR employees. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better group to go with. When experiencing all of the emotions that go with going on a mission trip, it was nice to have such an amazing group with which to process everything. This mission trip was an incredible experience that has bonded us all for life. I know we all feel like there is so much more work to be done in Haiti and we want to be a part of it! I am hopeful that we can find a time when we can all go back together and bring some others with us!
